My Story: Linda Carlson

For my first 20 years, I tried to live a good, moral life. I was involved in church activities, but I was still full of tension, guilt, and anxiety. Just before I went to college, I had some health problems that made me realize my own mortality—and I became very fearful of dying. At college, the message from my science classes was that life was an accident, not created by God. I soon began to wonder whether God even existed, and I became very empty inside. Then, during my sophomore year, a friend started attending Campus Crusade for Christ and invited me to join her. The people I met there seemed to have a real peace and joy I was lacking. They said it was their personal relationship with Jesus. I was skeptical since I had tried religion and felt it hadn’t worked for me.

Then one evening I heard a speaker talk about the Bible parable of the wise and foolish builders. The wise one chose a foundation of rock, and when the storms came, his house stood strong.

I knew my life was built on sand, so I asked Jesus to come into my life and become my solid foundation.

That was more than 40 years ago—and just the start of many exciting changes. As I began to have a personal relationship with Christ, I experienced relief from the fears and doubts I’d had. I also learned that my faith is anchored soundly—both intellectually and historically.

Yes, I still sometimes struggle with worry and fear. But the more I come to understand God’s love and forgiveness, the more I know I can relax in His care. He really is my rock and solid foundation—and I know He’ll be with me for the rest of my life.
